KUALA LUMPUR 3 SELANGOR 2
SUPER-SUB Mohamed Shafie and golden goal specialist C. Vijayandran denied
Selangor the FA of Malaysia-Milo National Under-18 title at the Police
Depot ground yesterday.
Shafie, who came in as a substitute to score against Perak in the
semifinals, and Vijayandran, who scored the golden goal against Perak to
make the final, practically enacted a re-run yesterday.
Selangor were never in the match and were lucky to score two goals off
the handful attempts they made while Kuala Lumpur could have wrapped up
the match if not for some poor shooting.
Mohamed Shawal scored Selangor's first when he neatly tucked in Mohamed
Fairuz's pass from the left. Although one goal down, Kuala Lumpur never
let up the pressure and kept Selangor goalkeeper Mohamed Fahmi on his
toes.
Opportunists Selangor pulled further ahead off one of their rare counter
attacks in the 50th minute when Kuala Lumpur defender Abdul Rahman and
Isma Firdaus were caught fooling around in their penalty box.
Zaidi Zaing stole the ball and tapped towards an unmarked Jaafar Salleh
to score.
While Selangor were still celebrating the goal, Kuala Lumpur pushed
ahead and were awarded a penalty when defender Nazaruddin Mokhtar handled
the ball in the box.
Shawal stepped forward and scored Kuala Lumpur's first.
In the 73th minute, Kuala Lumpur took out Mohamed Farid and brought in
Shafie. Shafie added spice into the Kuala Lumpur attack and a minute later
he was brought down in the box by Nazaruddin. Shafie took the penalty to
place Kuala Lumpur on par with Selangor.
Play went into sudden-death and Vijayandran scored from 25-metres out to
hand Kuala Lumpur the trophy.
Kuala Lumpur received RM20,000 for winning the title and KLFA president
Datuk Seri Megat Junid brought cheers to the camp when he announced that
the bounty is to be shared among the players.
Meanwhile, Kedah beat Perak 2-1 off goals from Akmal Rizal (65th, 83rd)
to take the third place. Perak replied through Mohamed Farouk.
