THE fastest man in Malaysia, Khairul Hafiz Jantan failed in his mission to beat the 48-year-old 200m record held by Tan Sri Dr M Jegathesan at the 93rd Malaysian Open at the Universiti Malaya grounds yesterday.
  The crowd came, and even Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin was on the stands, but Khairul clocked 21.10s, and Jegathesan's 20.92s achieved at the 1968 Mexico Olympics still stood proudly.
  Khairul rewrote the 100m national record with a 10.18 run at the Malaysia Games in Kuching, and will again attempt to break Jega's mark in the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games next year.
  "I did my best but it was not good enough. I have to work harder for the Sea Games, where I will make another attempt," said Khairul.

Malaysian Open: Raymond makes his move...

SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD Raymond Yew of Sabah beat national runners en route to claiming the 800m gold in the 93rd Edition of the Malaysian Open at the Universiti Malaya grounds yesterday.
  He clocked a personal best of 1:52.85s and beat Malaysia Games gold medallist Asif Rahman Jiyadeen and national runner M. Kesavan to stand tall at the top of the podium.
  Raymond, coached by Filipino Mario Pajarillo for the last four years at the Ranau Training Centre, improved his personal best by more than two seconds.
  His previous best was 1:55.07 which he did at the Kuching Malaysia Games for bronze.
  Asif Rahman clocked 1:53.71 for silver while Kesavan, who featured in the Singapore Sea Games last year, only managed 1:53.86 for bronze.

AHL: Tigress collapse after big lead...

THE MALAYSIAN women's hockey team took a 3-1 lead, but were held to a 3-3 draw after a late onslaught by New South Wales in the Australian Hockey League in Perth Saturday.
  Malaysia, called the Tigress, were down 0-1 before Fazilla Sylvester Silin (21st), Siti Noor Amarina (23rd) and Hanis Nadia Onn (30th) gave them a big lead.
  However, they failed to hold onto the lead and shared points instead. The Tigress have lost 3-1 to New Zealand, beat Northern Territories 7-1 for four points after three matches.
  The Malaysian Tigress will have a rest day after three consecutive matches, while the men's teams of Malaysian Tigers and Malaysian Blues will take to the field today.
  RESULT: Women -- Malaysian Tigress 3 New South Wales 3.
  SUNDAY: Men -- Malaysian Tigers v Northern Territories, Malaysian Blues v SA Hotshots.

AHL: Men fare miserably, women win...

THE Malaysian national women's team hammered Northern Territories 7-1 in the Australian Hockey League in Perth Friday.
  The win came at the back of a 3-1 defeat to New Zealand Futures on Thursday.
   However, the men's teams hit another bad patch as both the national and back-up squads lost their matches.
  The Malaysian Tigress, as the women are registered in the AHL, got their goals off Siti Rahmah Othman (ninth, 52nd), Nurul Nabihah Mansur (10thm 56th), Hanis Nadia Onn (20th), Wan Nor Faiezah (41st) and Raja Norsharina (58th).
  However the men's national team, known as the Malaysian Tigers, suffered a 5-2 defeat in the hands of Queensland Blades.
  The Queensland Blades scored five goals before the Tigers got back two off Shahril Saabah (47th) and Ramadan Rosli (57th).
  And Malaysia's back-up squad, called Malaysian Blues, lost 2-0 to WA Thundersticks.
  Saturday: Women -- Malaysian Tigress v New South Wales.
  Sunday: Men -- Malaysian Tigers v Northern Territories, Malaysian Blues v SA Hotshots.

Athletics: Jonathan's slow gold...

NO Malaysian national records were shattered in the 93rd Edition of the Malaysian Open Athletics at the Universiti Malaya grounds Friday.
  The only silver lining was that Sarawak's Jonathan Nyepa breezed away with the 100m gold medal with a time of 10.53. But he could not match or rewrite his personal best of 10.36s.
  And the women's 100m was won by S. Komalam Shally with a time of 11.87s. The Armed Forces lass, 28, holds a personal best of 11.75s.
  "I actually came here to better my personal best but it turned out to be a slow race, but I still won my first Open gold," said Jonathan.
  National 100m men's record holder Khairul Hafiz Jantan, 10.18s, did not compete in his pet event, but will run in the 200m Sunday.
  In the 100m morning heats, Badrul Hisham of Malacca caused a stir when it was flased that he clocked 10.28 but it was later ratified that he ran 10.63s.
  Malaysian Athletics Federation (MAF) president Datuk Karim Ibrahim said the confusion arose due to hand time and electronic timing.
  "The 10.28s was hand timed but flashed as the official result, but later ratified with the electronic time of 10.63s. I assure everybody that it will not happen again," said Karim.
  The 100m men's bronze went to Haikal hanafi of Negri Sembilan with a time of 10.68s.
  Komalam said it has been four years since she last won the 100m Malaysian Open gold.
  "I have been training hard since January, and the gold is a just result even though my time today failed to better my personal best. I will put in more work, to qualify for the Kuala Lumpur Sea games next year," said Komalam.
