NOTE: Malaysia 6 WAIS 0 in Down Under Tour.
THE Malaysian women's hockey team got off to a rousing start when they whipped Kazakhstan 8-0 in the World League Round Two in New Delhi yesterday.
Malaysia also hammered Kazakhstan 8-0 at the Incheon Asian Games in Busan last year.
The interesting fact against Kazakstan was that eight different players scored the eight goals.
Their next opponents are Russia today, which will be their toughest match in Group B, before they wrap up the fixtures against Singapore on Tuesday which should be a another walk in the park.
The women have never advanced to the World League Semi-finals, but look good to break the jinx in New Delhi as they are seeded second in the tournament.
Siti Ruhani started the goal-count with a seventh minute penalty stroke while Nurul Mansur (10th), Siti Othman (28th), Fatin Sukri (29th), Fazilla Sylvester Silin (33rd) and Norbaini Hashim (37th), Surizan Noh (53rd) and Hanis Onn (59th).
"Everything fell into place against Kazakhstan and the huge margin is a big boost as we head into the toughest clash in our group against Russia tomorrow (today).
"The confidence is there as we aim to play in the final when the dust settles, and if the team play like they did against Kazakhstan, I am confident Russia can be beaten as well," said Malaysian team manager Ernawati Mahmud.
Meanwhile, the second leg of the MHC-Milo-NSC Milo Cup quarter-finals will be played today, with no upsets expected from the Division Two Teams.
In the first leg on Friday, Division One teams SSTMI Thunderbolts, UniKL Young Guns, Petaling Jaya City Council and SSTMi-MSP Thunderbolts scored convincing wins and look set to advance to the semi-finals without much fuss.
TODAY: Quarterfinals second leg-- 1Mas Perlis (0) v SSTMI Thunderbolts (10) (Kangar, 4.45pm); BJSS Juniors (1) v SSP-MSP Thunderbolts (6) (Ministry of Education, 4.45pm); SMKDBL PHJ (1) v Petaling Jaya City Council (3) (Batu Pahat, 4.45pm); Nur Insafi-Penang HA (0) v UniKL Young Guns (3)(Sungai Petani, 4.45pm).

Easy day at the office for Div 1 teams..
SSTMI Thunderbolts and SSP-MSP-Thunderbolts are virtually through to the semifinals after convincing wins in the Milo Cup quarterfinals first leg Friday.
The Bandar Penawar sports school, who won the league title last month, whipped development side 1MAS Perlis 10 while SSP-MSP-Thunderbolts defeated Bukit Jalil Sport School Juniors 6-1.
While many expected Thuderbolts to breeze into the semifinals, team manager Adam Izambry refuses to let their guard down. When asked about being virtually through to the next round, he replied: "Hopefully yes."
"We can't take things lightly. It is a comfortable lead and we are expected to progress but we have to keep a high standard. I don't want anyone to take their foot off the pedal," said Adam.
Meanwhile, UniKL Young Guns coach I. Vikneswaran was not too happy with his side's display despite a 3-0 win over Nur Insafi-Penang HA.
"We created so many chances but struggled to convert. Yes, it was a good win but we have to make the most of chances... it could be crucial in some matches.
"The return leg is a different scene as we travel to Sungai Petani and that could take a toll. Fortunately, we made arrangement to travel on tonight (Friday) so I hope it gives the players more time to rest and get used to the pitch."
UniKL took the lead after 11 minutes through Nur Faiz Rosli and he doubled the lead with another field goal in the 38th minute.
Hafif Elkan converted a penalty in the 61st minute to wrap proceedings. Vikneswaran was disappointed as the team only converted one of their seven penalty corners.

Milo Cup: Odds favour Div One teams
THE MHC-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League Milo Cup knock-out stage highly favours Division One teams to dominate Friday, as they are far ahead of the Division Two qualifiers.
League champions SSTMI Thunderbolts are too good for 1Mas Perlis, while Petaling Jaya City Council (PJCC), UniKL Young Guns and SSP-MSP-Thunderbolts all went through a toughter time in Division One, and are hardened by their experience.
However, 1Mas Perlis are not awed, neither afraid of Thunderbolts who will be gunning for their fourth consecutive JHL double after lifting the League title.
The tiny state finished champions in Group B of Division Two: “The odds are definitely against us, but we are not going to bow out without a fight. I know my players will keep their heads up and show no fear against them (Thunderbolts),” said 1Mas Perlis coach Wira Osman.
On paper it should be easy pickings for the defending champions, however, Thunderbolts coach Wan Roslan Wan Rahman is not planningto take matters lightly and has prepared his charges to come out with guns blazing.
“On paper we are the better team but I dont' believe on relying on past match results so my players have been grilled to give a hundred per cent to make the second leg much easier," said Wan Roslan.
The most inconsistent team of the season title goes to PJCC, who were looking at the league silverware at one stage, but fell to third after losing steam at the tail-end.
“No doubt we were close to laying our hands on the Division One title at one stage, so finishing third is rather disappointing.
“Consistency was our biggest problem, however, the team are now focused on making the final of the Milo Cup and our first step is to beat the Johor team (SMKDBL PH Johor)," said PJCC coach Azlansaufi Ahmad Sufian.
Division One runners-up UniKL Young Guns will also be hoping to put aside their erratic form when they play Division Two champions Nur Insafi-Penang Hockey.
UniKL have been on a roller-coaster ride throughout their campaign so coach I. Vickneswaran is keeping his fingers crossed that his side shows up with the right mindset today.
“A team must fire on all cylinders consistently, however that is something that we have failed to do this season.
“On paper we may be the better side, but take nothing away from Nur Insafi, as they have some really talented players that can trouble to us if we gave them too much space,” Said Vickneswaran.
FRIDAY: MILO Cup q-finals (First Leg): SSTMI Thunderbolts v 1Mas Perlis (Kangar, 4.45pm); SSP-MSP-Thunderbolts v Bukit Jalil SS Juniors (Temerloh, 4.45pm); Petaling Jaya City Council v SMKDBL PH Johor (National Stadium, 4.45pm, Pitch I); UniKL Young Guns v Nur Insafi-Penang HA (National Stadium, 4.45pm, Pitch II).

Not wanting to underestimate their quarter-finals opponents Nur Insafi-Penang HA, Faiz said experience will be their best friend in the knock-out.
"We are not underestimating the capabilities of Nur Insafi who have proven to be an improving side judging from the results in the Division Two knock-outs.
"Only that, we have an experienced outfit, and hopefully they don't make it difficult for themselves in the two leg quarters," said Faiz.
Thunderbolts team manager Adam Izamry was all smiles after 1Mas Perlis picked their number for the quarters: "Yes, it looks like our half of the quarters draw is much more easier than the other half where PJCC and UniKL will most probably advance to the semis.
"It looks like we will be waiting for which-ever team that reaches the final from the other half," said a confident Adam.

MHC settle for two deputy presidents
THE Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) affiliates finally came to a consensus yesterday when it was proposed that two deputy presidents' seats be made available to stop internal squabbling.
At their Council Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, where amendments to the constitution were discussed, the main issue revolved around the deputy president's post as well as the abolishment of the executive council.
Cooler heads prevailed as the executive council will also be retained, as abolishing it would mean a smaller committee to run the administration while the executive council only meet once in four years at their congress.
Now, MHC have to ensure they get a two-thirds majority during EGM in March, to approve the amenements and forward it to the Sports Commissioner as well as the International Hockey Federation (FIH) for endorsement before proceeding with the AGM which is proposed to be held in May.
"The council members decided that two deputy president's posts would be better and also to retain the executive council. Other than that there were only minor strenghtening of our constitution," said MHC deputy president Puan Sri Raja Noora Ashikin.
Noora Ashikin was pivotal in stopping the MHC from making a mockery of themselves by not adhearing to the regulations of the FIH regarding gender equity.
The FIH as well as the Sports Commissioner's office then rejected earlier amendments made to the constitution, and yesterday was back to first base, in a commical merry-go-round.
"Now we need to go through the motions properly by endorsement at the EGM, getting approval from the FIH as well as Sports Commissioner's office before we hold our AGM," said Raja Noora Ashikin.
Earlier, Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal was the sole nominee for the presdient's post, while Raja Noora Ashikin and Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad were nominated for the sole deputy president's post.
However, with two deputy presidents' inserted into the constitution, Raja Noora Ashikin is likely to have no challengers while Azmi might face a battle at the ballots.
Also, rumours are rife that there will also be a challenger for Subahan this time around.
