TWIN terrors Noordiana and Noornadia Norrizan kicked up a storm in the
Sixth Asean Taekwondo Federation Championships when they bagged a gold
medal each at the Cheras Badminton Hall in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Noordiana won the below 47kg category while Noornadia landed the gold in
the 47-51kg bout with a sterling display to contribute two of five gold
medals won by Malaysia.
The twins, who could not take part in the ongoing Malaysia Games because
they are three months short of 16-years-old, now have the World Junior
Championships in Athens to look forward to.
Coached by 1988 Seoul Olympic Games bronze medallist M. Vasugi,
Noornadia and Noordiana have been on a steady rise as they also won medals
at the recent Korean Open.
"I won the Korean Open gold while my sister won a bronze and now we are
looking forward to taking part in the World Junior Championships in Athens
on September 27," said Noordiana.
However, what makes the twins achievements remarkable is they achieved
their feats in an Open category tournament. The win will definitely boost
their morale for the World Juniors.
The other Malaysian girls who won gold were Soo Lai Yin (51-55kg) and
Ting Sing Lan (67-72Kg).
The Malaysian men were a disappointing lot as only S. Vijinddran won
gold in the above 84Kg category.
Malaysia finished second overall with five gold, three silver and five
bronze medals in the Asean Championships despite fielding second
stringers.
Vietnam swept the overall title with seven gold, two silver and six
bronze medals.
