Matri gets a lashing

THE Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) reversed their pat-on-the-back to Matri, into a severe lashing when they kicked out the Perlis team from the Junior Hockey League (JHL) fixtures.
Matri, who failed to show-up for their match against BPSS- WHPC at the Taman Daya Stadium last Sunday, were initially only fined RM500.
However, the JHL technical committee yesterday decided to boot them out of Group A in Division Two, and also make all their matches null-and-void.
Matri were also slapped a one-season ban from playing in the JHL.
“After receiving feedback from out members, it was decided that Matri must not be let off the hook easily, because then, the MHF will be sending a wrong signal to other teams,” said MHF secretary Maninderjit Singh.
Matri gave a lame excuse for not turning up for the match: “The team management said they could not arrange for transport, but they only told us two hours before the match was supposed to start.
“There was nothing that we could do to help them in such a short notice, as they are from Perlis and playing in Johor Baru,” said Maninderjit.

Learn from UniKL

COMMENT by Jugjet Singh

UNIKL, only in their second Junior Hockey League (JHL) season, has turned into a micro role model on how hockey should be developed in the country.
They won the Overall title and finished second in the League last year, and on Sunday won the League title are are looking good for a double.
Their only nemesis are Bandar Penawar Sports School (BPSS), who were the League champions last year and second on Sunday.
Another sports school, Bukit Jalil, were double champions for six consecutive times from 2003 to 2009, but have been relegated to third after they started to field 16 and 17 year-olds.
UniKL’s success can be traced back to their chancellor, who is Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, strong funding, good ad ministration, a good coaching set-up and exposure in the Malaysia Hockey League which they joined only in 2009.
The University side must have spent close to RM750,000 in both the MHL and JHL this season, and it was money well spent as the exposure in the senior league has turned some of the boys into men.
Fifteen of their players are in the Project 2013 squad, while BPSS have 11 Project players -- making both the teams into a hot-bed for training future national players.
That is why the progress of these two teams are being closely followed by an army of national coaches, as they have some budding players like Manraj Singh, the son of former national skipper Sarjit Singh, and Joel Samuel, the son of current national team coordinator Stephen van Huizen.
Both the players are lanky, and only 19-years-old, but are a chip off the old-block.
The administration, led by team manager Amir Azhar, have played a great role in promoting the team by having live match updates via twitter, and an impressive fan-base among the UniKL students who show up at stadiums on match days as well as 2,658 followers on Facebook.
They also took the trouble to hire a kiwi coach Darren Smith for the MHL, while another Malaysian-born living in New Zealand Matthew Ling and experienced Malaysian coach S. Vellapan, as well as former international S. Sel varaju are among the coaches for the JHL.
The clubside has many of the qualities which are just being ingrained into the MHF after decades in existence.
So, maybe the parent body should pick up a few pointers from their cub on how to make winners from whiners, and also make sure that the talent that comes through this JHL season does not disappear into the red-tape and political differences void.

India, Pakistan send diluted teams..

2010: India-Korea joint champs.

THE last two consecutive Azlan Shah Cup champion India and Asian Games gold medallists Pakistan will send diluted teams for the tournament which will be held in Ipoh on May 5-15.

India said they are sending their best available, as Tushar Khandekar and the former skipper Rajpal Singh are injured, while Sardara Singh and Sandeep Singh. were disqualified because they did not attend training camp in Delhi, but played in Belgium instead.
As for Pakistan, three players who are in the training camp for the Azlan Shah have been issued show-cause letters because they are said to have signed deals with the planned World Series of Hockey in India.
The World Series of Hockey is not sanctioned by the International Hockey Federation, who have warned their affiliates not to allow their players to compete in the tour nament.
“The PHF executive council took a very clear decision recently that since the WSH is not sanctioned by the In ternational Hockey Federation or its affiliated units it will not be recognized by us.
“As per the council's decision we have asked Butt, Wasim and Abbasi to explain if they have any contracts with the WSH and if so are they willing to break this association with the organizers of the unsanctioned event,” said PHF secretary, Asif Bajwa to The Times of India.
Bajwa, himself a former Olympian, made it clear that if the three top players didn’t clarify their positions they would not be selected for the Azlan Shah tournament, the squad for which will be announced on April 28th.
Butt, Wasim and Abbasi were members of the Pakistan team that won the Asian Games gold medal for the first time in 20 years last year in China.
Bajwa also said that if any player was found having ties with the unsanctioned World Hockey Series he would have nothing more to do with Pakistan hockey.
Bajwa said they also have reports about some other players having entered into agreements with the WHS organisers including Pakistan’s Asian games captain Zeeshan Ashraf and former Olympian Mohammad Saqlain.
Zeeshan pulled out of the Azlan Shah Cup on personal grounds and is not attending the training camp.
India beat Malaysia to the gold in 2009, while they were declared as joint champions with South Korea in the 2010 edition, which was rained-off.
The other teams in the tournament are Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain and South Korea.

UniKL champions

UNIKL lifted their maiden MHF-NSC-Milo Division One title when they held Bandar Penawar Sports School (BPSS) 1-1 at the Kuala Lumpur Hockey Stadium last night.
UniKL were crowned champions on a four-goal average, as both the teams were tied on 25 points after completing their League fixtures.
UniKL pocketed RM10,000 while BPSS RM5,000 for finishing second in Division One.
The title match was entertaining with high-quality hockey played by both teams, but it was BPSS who settled down early while UniKL were shaky in the opening minutes.
And BPSS took the lead off their first penalty corner itself in the 21st minute when Shahril Saabah's low push beat goalkeeper Shahrul Azaddin. However, UniKL came back into the picture by winning six penalty corners and finally scored their equalsier in the sixth attempt.
Nor Aqmal Gaffar finally made it count in the 31st minute, and even though BPSS earned three consecutive penalty corners in the 35th minute, the store stood at 1-1 into the breather. The second half was also an entertaining affair, but both the teams failed to break the deadlock, even though UniKL were presented with many opportunities to score.
"It was a good show from my players and now that we have the League title, we will plan for a double this season," said UniKL coach S.Velappan.
BPSS won the League title last season, also on goals difference over UniKL, but then lost the Overall title to UniKL.
"We had the first half sealed, but could not convert many sitters in the second half and paid the price for it.
"However, I am not dissapointed with the players, and now we will plan to deny UniKL the Overall title," said BPSS coach Wan Roslan.
Meanwhile, in a Division Two Group A match, Matri failed to show up for their match against BPSS-WHPC and could find their entire fixtures made nul-and-void.
Even the Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) officials were in the dark as to why Matri did not show up at the Taman Daya Stadium in Johor Baru.

High-stakes at KLHA

THE battle-lines have drawn, but there are no favourites when defending League champion Bandar Penawar Sports School (BPSS) plays Overall champion UniKL in Division One of the MHF-NSC-Milo Junior League today.
Playing at the Kuala Lumpur HA Stadium, the stakes are high as the winner will be crowned as the League champion in the final League fixture for both the teams.
UniKL, playing only in their second JHL season, have shown consistency in all their matches, while BPSS, who were crowned as League champions for the first time last year, are known for playing as a unit.
Bukit Jalil Sports School, six-time consecutive double champions since 2003, have been sent to the shadows after both BPSS and UniKL came into the picture.
“This is the most challenging match this season for us, and unfortunately it is also our last League fixture and that means we can’t afford a slip-up.
“The team has been progressing well towards this crucial match, and I believe we will wrest the title which we lost to BPSS last season on goal-difference,” said UniKL coach S. Velappan.
BPSS coach Wan Roslan has formulated a sound plan, and hopes his charges will executive it today.
“We have our plans to defend our title, and if the players execute it, victory is ours for sure,” said Roslan.
Meanwhile, in the only Division One match yesterday, BJSS Juniors beat Kelantan 6-3 with goals from Hafif Elkan (second, 57th), Rafizul Ezry (12th), Zizi Azwan (33rd), Syazwi Rani (40th), Zulhaziq Hashim (59th).

BPSS closer to defending title

BANDAR Penawar Sports School (BPSS) slammed Ipoh Juniors 9-1 to set up a mouth-watering MHF-NSC-Milo Division One title clash against UniKL on Sunday.
UniKL top the standings on a better goal difference, and only need a draw, while BPSS need an outright win to claim their second consecutive League title.
Yesterday, playing at the Azlan Shah Stadium, BPSS needed 12 goals to be onpar with UniKL, but stopped short of achieveing their target.
"There was a 30 minute delay because of rain, and then the pitch became a little heavy, but my players still managed to win comfortably and now we have to beat UniKL to defend our title," said BPSS coach Wan Roslan.
The win has primed them for the title chase: "It was a good boost for my players as they managed to score many goals even though we did not have out top-scorer on the pitch," said Roslan.
For the record, UniKL played their first JHL match against Ipoh Juniors, and struggled to beat them 3-2.
While BPSS played without their 11-goal scorer Firhan Ashaari, who was benched because of two-yellow cards. However, he will be eligible to play against UniKL.
The BPSS goals were scored by Shahrusahadan Basri (4th, 64th), Faiz Helmi Jali (40th), Fariq Saadon (47th), Shahzril Irwan (50th), Hafiz Seleman (52nd), Fitri Saari (56th), Shahril Saabah (58th, 68th).
While the Ipoh goal was scored by Harris Fadila in the 54th minute.

Sukhvinderjeet passes away

By Haresh Deol

KLANG: "A big loss to the nation".
Those were the words of former national coach C. Paramalingam as the hockey fraternity mourns the death of former Olympian Sukhvinderjeet Singh Kulwant Singh yesterday.
Sukhvinderjeet passed away due to a heart attack. He was 51.
"Sukhvinderjeet was a very nice man, a nice character to be with. It is such a terrible loss especially at such a young age," said Paramalingam.
"He has always been a very obliging man, on and off the field. He will surely be missed."
Sukvinderjeet, a former Setapak High School lad, rose to fame when he was spotted by Paramalingam to play for the Klang Municipal Council hockey team.
He then landed a job there but it didn’t stop him from representing Selangor and later the national team.
Sukhvinderjeet played under the watchful eyes of Paramalingam as the team played in the pre-Olympics in Europe followed by the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
Among his teammates then were Ow Soon Kooi, Yahya Atan, Sarjit Singh, Stephen Van Huizen and Zulkifli Abbas.

1975 Sri Shan honoured

By Haresh Deol

PETALING JAYA: It's Datuk N. Srishanmuganathan from now on.
The former hockey international, better known as Sri Shan, will be conferred the Darjah Datuk Paduka Mahkota Perak (DPMP) in conjunction with Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah's 83rd birthday celebration.
Born on Jan 2, 1947, Srishanmuganathan is best remembered for skippering the national team at the 1975 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur.
The team, which included the likes of M. Mahendran, Datuk Poon Fook Loke, K. Balasingam and A. Francis, produced a sensational performance to overcome defending champions Holland 2-1 in the last group match at the Kilat Club ground.
Azlan Shah, who was the Malaysian Hockey (MHF) vice-president then, even shed tears of joy as the team booked a date with India in the semifinals.
The national side put up a gusty performance before going down 3-2 to India in the semifinals. It was Malaysia's best achievement in the World Cup.
Sri Shan also represented the country at the 1970 Asian Games, the 1972 and 1976 Olympic Games and played in the 1973 and 1978 World Cups.
He was national coach from 1987-88.
Receiving a similar award is MHF deputy-president Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad.

Tribute from 1975 team-mate

By K. BALASINGAM.
Kuala Lumpurletters@nst.com.my

I AM writing this letter in appreciation of my fellow player and captain of the 1975 Malaysian World Cup hockey team, Datuk N. Sri Shanmuganathan, who was awarded the Darjah Datuk Paduka Mahkota Perak (DPMP) title by the Sultan of Perak on Tuesday.
I am very proud that his contributions have been finally recognised.
He has made tremendous contributions to the game, as a player, manager and coach.
As the captain, especially in the 1975 World Cup, he led the team exceptionally well. And who can forget the winning goal he scored against Holland, the reigning World Cup champion at the time, on March 14, 1975 at Kilat Club.
The then prime minister, Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, who was also the president of the Malaysian Hockey Federation gave each of the players and officials a gold Omega watch for their effort.
I am very honoured to have been in that team and we played really well under Shan's guidance and that of our late coach Datuk Ho Koh Chye. The latter would have been very proud of Shan.
We were the best assembled team and we delivered the results. Anyone who talks about hockey refers to the 1975 World Cup team with pride.
On behalf of the players of the 1975 team, I thank Tuanku for honouring Shanmuganathan with that title.

Battle Royale: BPSS v UniKL

THE MHF-NSC-Milo Junior League Division One League title will be a toss between UniKL and Bandar Penawar Sports School (BPSS) when they square off on April 24 at the Kuala Lumpur HA Stadium.
UniKL have maximum 24 points after eight matches, while BPSS 21 after seven matches. BPSS will have an easy encounter against eighth-spot Ipoh Juniors, on April 22, and then the crunch match will decided the new champion.
For the record, BPSS are the defending League champions, while UniKL the Overall champions.
Last season, UniKL needed a win to seal the League title, but drew 1-1 and finished second. The 1-1 draw was enough for BPSS-Thunderbolt, who have been competing since 2000, to bag their maiden Division One title with 22 points from seven wins and a draw.
UniKL finished second with 20 points from six wins and two draws.
“We were so close to a double, but the draw dashed our hopes. This season, we have piled up the goals and have a 12- goal lead over BPSS.
“However, even with the comfortable goal-lead, we do not intend to play for another draw. An outright win is what I will plan for,” said UniKL coach S. Velappan.
Both the teams are undefeated this season, and UniKL can even afford a draw in their last match, unless BPSS score 13 goals against Ipoh Juniors.

Italian Teen Stallion!

Matteo Manassero became the youngest ever Maybank Malaysian Open champion when he brilliantly held off the challenges from Gregory Bourdy and Rory McIlroy on Sunday.

The dashing Italian, who turns 18 on Tuesday, produced a superb final round of four-under-par 68, thanks largely to a pivotal eagle three on the 10th hole to triumph by one from Frenchman Bourdy, who battled to a 67.

A week after his Masters disappointment where he led for 63 holes before fading away, McIlroy produced a brave fight in the US$2.5 million showpiece, which was celebrating its 50th anniversary and sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour.

The Northern Irishman, the world number nine, battled magnificently on the back nine to give himself a title chance but failed to find the crucial birdie at the last hole to force a play-off with Manassero as he settled for third place with a 69.

Manassero, who will break into the world’s top-50 with his second career victory, said: “It’s fantastic. I managed to achieve a victory which is just fantastic. To have another win two days before 18, it’s a great achievement.”

The Italian completed his third round this morning with a 67 to enter the final round tied for the lead with Alexander Noren of Sweden and showed his immense talent by emerging atop a crowded leaderboard in the end.

He needed two crucial up and downs for par saves on the eighth and nine holes to turn in 35 before producing the shot of the week by holing holed out a nine iron approach for an eagle three at the par five 10th hole to grab the lead from Bourdy.

Two more birdies and a lone bogey ensured Manassero, who eclipsed last year’s winner Noh Seung-yul of Korea as the youngest champion, stayed ahead of the chasing pack as he picked up the Seagram Trophy from Malaysian prime minister Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak and a winner’s cheque of US$416,660.

“The up and downs on eight and nine were very big. They left me on top of the leaderboard at one behind Bourdy at the time. Two great up and downs from the bunker and then holing a nine iron on 10 (for eagle) was maybe the turning point and made me think of the possibility of winning,” said Manassero, who was last season’s Rookie of the Year in Europe.

“It wasn’t easy. It was tough. The course is really tight and all the players were doing good and playing well. It’s just not easy to concentrate, especially to stay calm. I managed quite well. Fortunately I ended up like this.”

Asked how he planned to celebrate his birthday on Tuesday, Manassero said he would be looking at altering his playing schedule as a place in the world’s top-50 would get him into the Majors.

“I’m just buying a few majors and the TPC (The Players Championship) right now. It will definitely change. I will get into the top-50 which was my main goal.”

Bangladesh’s Siddikur was the top Asian Tour finisher at eighth place after he signed off with a 69 to finish seven shots behind the winner while world number one Martin Kaymer of Germany was a further shot back after closing with a 72.

Masters Tournament champion Charl Schwartzel of South Africa claimed a share of 11th place after a 70 while Danny Chia, the lone Malaysian who made the halfway cut, settled for tied 42nd position with a final round 76.

Oh Noh!

Title holder Noh Seung-yul of Korea bowed out from the US$2.5 million Maybank Malaysian Open on Saturday but is upbeat of bouncing back into form.
Noh, the youngest ever Asian Tour Order of Merit champion, shot an even-par 72 for a two-day total of one-over-par 145, one stroke from the halfway cut at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.
Noh played with newly crowned Masters champion Charl Schwartzel and reigning British Open winner Louis Oosthuizen and was disappointed not to join the duo in the last two days of the tournament co sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour.
“My swing was horrible and the ball was flying every where. I played badly,” said the two-time Asian Tour winner.
Noh worked on his swing with world renowned swing guru Butch Harmon, Tiger Woods’ former coach, in February and said he was struggling to cope with the new swing changes.
“I changed my swing two months ago and had a finger injury as well. I’m still coping with my new swing but I’m confident to bounce back with a little bit more practice. I like my new swing a lot but it needs some time for me to get used to,” added the Korean.
Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen finished above the cutline and will join second round leaders Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland and Alexander Noren of Sweden and world number Martin Kaymer of Germany in the last two rounds.
Among the other big names who missed the halfway cut include Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand, who won the SAIL Open in India last month, Nick Dougherty of England and Todd Hamilton of the United States, a former British Open champion in 2004.
A total of 75 players made the cut.

Belgium to host third Olympic Qualifier

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – The FIH announced today the official dates for nine major events in the next year, including the sites and dates of the six Olympic Qualification tournaments. The Olympic qualification tournaments will have three host nations with a men’s and women’s tournament running at the same time.
The 2011 calendar year will conclude with two major men’s events. The FIH Champions Challenge 1 will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa from November 26 - December 4. Overlapping with that event by two days will be the FIH Champions Trophy in New Delhi, India which starts on Saturday, December 3 and finishes on Sunday, December 11, 2011.
A busy 2012 begins with the women springing back into to action from January 28 - February 5 for the FIH Women’s Champions Trophy in Argentina.
"The 2012 season will be one of the busiest and most important in recent history," said FIH President Leandro Negre. "Our regular schedule will be supplemented with the Olympic qualifiers and of course the Olympic Games themselves, making it non-stop hockey during the year."
The first of the Olympic Qualification Tournaments will be hosted by India in New Delhi from February 15-26 with six men’s and six women’s teams battling for a spot in the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The next Olympic Qualification Tournament will take place one month later, from March 14-25, 2012 in Beerschot, Belgium. It will be followed by the third Olympic Qualification Tournament in Kakamigahara, Japan from April 25 - May 6, 2012. All three tournaments will host the men’s and women’s tournaments at the same time.
The trio of joint tournaments is the final opportunity for teams to qualify for the London 2012 Olympic Games with the winner of each men’s and women’s event earning a place in London.
The teams assigned to the qualification tournaments will not be known until the completion of all of this year’s continental championships, which will be after the Pan American Games, scheduled to finish on 29 October. Winners of the five Continental Championships earn an automatic berth to the 2012 London Olympics.
Following the Continental Championships, teams that do not automatically earn a berth to the Olympics will be placed into one of the three qualification tournaments, depending on where they finish in their Continental Championships and how many places their Continental Federation has been allocated for the Olympic Qualification Tournaments.

Schwartzel one-over in opening round

AGUSTA Masters champion Charl Schwartzel of Germany did not get off to the dream start that he had wanted, but at least he didn't fall asleep while playing one-over 73 in the first round of the Maybank Malaysian Open.
Schwartzel, starting from the 10th, made three bogies on the 11th, 13th and 16th before surviving on the return nine birdies at holes Nos 2 and 3.
His clubs, which went missing on the 26-hour journey from Augusta to Kuala Lumpur, arrived at 9pm on Wednesday night, giving him little time to get into grips.
"It was never easy today (yesterday) as I never got my swing the whole day. After lots of travel, I am just not quite prepared for this tournament, but at least I didn't fall asleep during the game," said Schwartzel.
He didn't sleep well on Wednesday night, and felt the 12-hour time chance tough to handle.
"I didn't sleep well, it was difficult to adjust to the 12-hour zone change. I struggled to focus, and the golf swing is tight and the body is not responding right now.
"But there are still 54 holes to go which means plenty of birdies to collect. At least I am not out of contention, and with three days left, the feeling might come back, and I will be back on track.
"I'm still game to hit a few good balls, and make a few good putts and challenge for the title," was Schwartzel's warning to those who feel he's out of the way.

Oh Noh! Champ shoots one over

DEFENDING champion Noh Seung-yul of South Korea fired an eagle, but his six bogies saw him one-over 73 after the first round of the Maybank Malaysian Open.
Noh, who started from the first tee, was on song as he sank the eagle on par-five No 3, but his match collapsed on the back nine.
His three birdies were on the fifth, 14th and 18th, while his bogeys were on the sixth, ninth, 11th, 12th, 16th and 17th.
The 19-year-old was on the same flight with Major champions Louis Oosthuizen from South Africa and compatriot Charl Schwartzel.
Did it make him feel nervous?
"I wasn't feeling nervous, as I felt like it was just any other tournament. There was a huge crowd following us, and it was nice to have people cheering you.
"This was my first pairing with Louis, but I have played several times with Carl last year."
He branded his eagle as lucky: "I didn't hit my driver properly, but was lucky it landed on the fairway. I used a five-wood (265 yards), for my second shot and it landed 15 feet from the hole, and then I made it count," said Noh.
Noh, who had rested for one month before this tournament to heal his injured finger, said he felt tired on the course.
"My golf shots seem fine, but I felt tired while playing. I practiced a lot the last three days, and I think I need to rest today and bounce back tomorrow," said the Korean.

Schwartzel tired, but gung-ho

US Masters champion Charl Schwartzel looked jet-lagged, rued his lost clubs, and was still trying to get over the celebrations after a magnificent week in Augusta.
But the South African believes he will be in contention, and even hopes to land the Maybank Malaysian Open title come Sunday at the KLGCC.
"Obviously, last week was such a big week and it is still so difficult to take it all in. I've been so busy with the media afterwards, and after a few hours' rest, I travelled for another 26 hours before arriving here," said Schwartzel.
"So, I have not really taken it all in yet. But whenever I enter a golf tournament, I try to play my best. And I will this week see if I can win this one as well."
He was on the same flight route as Irishman Rory McIlroy, and both arrived in Kuala Lumpur minus their golf baggage.
"I have yet to play the course (Pro-Am yesterday) as I lost my clubs in transit. But my caddy is walking the course right now (yesterday), and I should be all right tomorrow (today) as I will get used to the conditions while playing," he said.
Winning the Masters has also given Schwartzel the confidence to take on any tournament that comes his way.
"It (winning the US Masters) just gives you a lot of confidence coming into an event. If it doesn't, then there is something wrong. You are on such a high and you feel you can win anything, and that is what I will try and do this weekend."

Professional killers assemble at KLGCC

SOME of the world's best golfers will assemble at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC) today, but it is anyone's guess who will hoist the Seagram Trophy at the end of the 50th edition of the Maybank Malaysian Open on Sunday.
US Masters champion Charl Schwartzel of South Africa, World No 1 and PGA Championship winner Martin Kaymer of Germany, reigning British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa and Rory McIlroy, the World No 9 from Northern Ireland, are all part of the glamour line-up who will battle for the winner's cheque of US$333,330 (RM1 million) in the US$2.5 million showpiece.
Also in the fray is defending champion Noh Seung Yul of South Korea, who is determined to hold on to the title he won at the same course.
Kaymer believes the soggy conditions will make it difficult for everybody and that it would be impossible to predict the winning score.
"I don't even know the winning score of last year!" said Kaymer.
"I played a round today (yesterday) and the problem is that it's (the greens) very soft and you can play very aggressive with the approach shots.
"I played three-under, and will be happy to repeat the same tomorrow (today), but I can't predict the winning score."
Kaymer played in Malaysia in 2007 but that was when he was just another golfer trying to make the cut.
"My life has changed a little since. I played at Saujana (Golf and Country Club) and my brother was my caddy!
"It was my fourth or fifth tournament on the European Tour and I missed every cut until I played at Saujana.
"Malaysia was the first time I made the cut on the European Tour and made my first pay cheque.
"So, it (the 50th edition) is a big tournament for me as I am back here as the World No 1, and have a professional caddy.
"Life has changed since," added the lanky German.
On the home front, 22 golfers will attempt to break the Malaysian Open jinx, as no local has ever won the title since its inception in 1962.

MALAYSIAN amateur Hisyam Abd Majid is looking forward to becoming a professional by making the cut and collecting his dues in the Maybank Malaysian Open which tees off today.
Hisyam, 19, will be among 22 Malaysians, six of whom are amateurs, who will be trying to make the cut for the weekend at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.
"It is not an impossible target, as I have played the course and it has been kind to me. I hope to play all four rounds, and hopefully, make some money and turn pro," said Hisyam.
Among the other local professional hopefuls are Danny Chia, Iain Steel, Ben Leong, Shaaban Hussin and S. Siva Chandhran.

Can Danny finally end Malaysian misery?

Pic: Danny Chia

DANNY Chia is no stranger to the Maybank Malaysian Open, and has seen his name at the leader-board on two occasions, only to falter after the cut-off.
And he is eager to prove himself again, when he tees off at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC) alongside 21 other Malaysian hopefuls.
The fact that no Malaysian has won this national cham pionship since 1962, has made him more determined.
“I came close in 2008 and 2009, only to crumble under pressure. However, I have taken it as a learning curve, and as always, will aim to make an impression at the KLGCC,” said Chia.
He has had a lousy start this season, as he was bogged down by a wrist injury, but he has amassed over US$600,000 in The Asian Tour since 2004, He was also the first Malaysian to win on the Tour, when he triumphed in the 2002 Taiwan Open.
Chia was in contention in the Maybank Malaysian Open in 2008, and was the halfway leader in the 2009 edition before finishing in tied 11th.
“I have recovered from the injury, well almost 90 per cent, and after playing a round this morning (yesterday), I feel the greens at KLGCC are much better than last year.
“The greens have matured, unlike last year when the course was newly refurbished, and I believe it is going to be a better Open for me as well as the other Malaysians,” said Chia.
Among the other local hopefuls are Iain Steel, Ben Leong, Shaaban Hussin and S. Siva Chandhran.
While Chia currently sits in 64th place on the Asian Tour career earnings, his compatriot Iain Steel lies as the highest ranking Malaysian in 57th place with earnings of US$664,246.
Steel holds the distinction as the first golfer from the country to play in the British Open and is highly regarded as the most consistent golfer on the Asian Tour where he has kept his Tour card since 2006.
An elusive Asian Tour title continues to elude Steel, whose father is Scottish, but it would be a fitting occasion should he win the elusive Seagram Trophy next week.
On the other side of the spectrum, Ben Leong will be eager to make his first cut in the Malaysian Open after five attempts.
The young Malaysian was victorious in the 2008 Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters, which saw him beat Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand in an epic duel and he has gone on to enjoy fruitful results on the Asian tour.
However, with the world No 1 Martin Kaymer of Germany and newly crowned Masters champion South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel also on the same course, it will be a mammoth task for a Malaysian to sweep the elusive title.

Augusta hero Schwartzel set for Malaysia date

SOUTH Africa’s Charl Schwartzel, the newly crowned Masters champion, will be among the draw-card for the Maybank Malaysian Open starting on Thursday at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.
The others with hot putters are world No 1 Martin Kaymer of Germany, Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa and Rory McIlroy of Ireland.
Schwartzel beat a field of renowned golfers including Tiger Woods of the US and Lee Westwood of England, at Augusta National.
He birdied the last four-holes at Augusta and shot 66 for a 14-under-par 274, winning two shots over Australian’s Adam Scott and Jason Day.
His four-shot final round winning comeback is the largest at the Masters Tournament since Sir Nick Faldo overcame a six-shot deficit to beat Greg Norman in 1996.
This is also Schwartzel’s first Major title and he became the third South African to don the green jacket following Gary Player and Trevor Immelman.
McIlroy displayed a stunning round of golf at the Masters but a triple bogey on the final round forced the 21-year-old to give up his three-day lead.
The 50th edition of the Maybank Malaysian Open will see a dazzling display of golf as Malaysian professionals compete with some of the world’s best players for the USD 2.5 million purse.

Peter Thomson at KLGCC

FIVE-TIME British Open champion Peter Thomson, who played in the Inaugural Malayan Open in 1962, yesterday made his presence felt at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.
Back then, Thomson competed in the Malayan Open Golf Championship which attracted a strong field of 76 pro fessionals including 1963 British Open champion Bob Charles, Taiwanese Hsieh Yung Yo and Japan’s Hideyo Sugimoto.
“It’s quite an impressive line-up at the 50th Malaysian Open this year.
“With Charl Schwartzel coming off the Masters at Augusta and the line-up is definitely a strong one. There are 22 local professionals playing, that is more than what you would normally get back in those days,” said Thomson.
The 81-year old shared a joke or two with members of the media while reminiscing about his Open wins by adding, “The third time I won the Open, I went down to the car dealership because I really wanted a Jaguar but they said I didn’t have enough money. So that just meant I had to go back out and win another Open.”
Shaaban Hussin, also a Maybank ambassador, is looking forward to the tough challenges that will present itself at the Malaysian Open. Aside from that, Shaaban is hoping he will get his chance to play alongside his idol, Rory McIlroy.
“I have to step up my game if I want to play alongside the greats. But whatever it is, I’m not too nervous about the Malaysian Open because I won’t be the sole Malaysian representative. I just need to adjust my game to the greens because it’s fast, long and tough.”
