NOTE: Malaysia 6 WAIS 0 in Down Under Tour.
THE Malaysian women's hockey team got off to a rousing start when they whipped Kazakhstan 8-0 in the World League Round Two in New Delhi yesterday.
Malaysia also hammered Kazakhstan 8-0 at the Incheon Asian Games in Busan last year.
The interesting fact against Kazakstan was that eight different players scored the eight goals.
Their next opponents are Russia today, which will be their toughest match in Group B, before they wrap up the fixtures against Singapore on Tuesday which should be a another walk in the park.
The women have never advanced to the World League Semi-finals, but look good to break the jinx in New Delhi as they are seeded second in the tournament.
Siti Ruhani started the goal-count with a seventh minute penalty stroke while Nurul Mansur (10th), Siti Othman (28th), Fatin Sukri (29th), Fazilla Sylvester Silin (33rd) and Norbaini Hashim (37th), Surizan Noh (53rd) and Hanis Onn (59th).
"Everything fell into place against Kazakhstan and the huge margin is a big boost as we head into the toughest clash in our group against Russia tomorrow (today).
"The confidence is there as we aim to play in the final when the dust settles, and if the team play like they did against Kazakhstan, I am confident Russia can be beaten as well," said Malaysian team manager Ernawati Mahmud.
Meanwhile, the second leg of the MHC-Milo-NSC Milo Cup quarter-finals will be played today, with no upsets expected from the Division Two Teams.
In the first leg on Friday, Division One teams SSTMI Thunderbolts, UniKL Young Guns, Petaling Jaya City Council and SSTMi-MSP Thunderbolts scored convincing wins and look set to advance to the semi-finals without much fuss.

Easy day at the office for Div 1 teams..
SSTMI Thunderbolts and SSP-MSP-Thunderbolts are virtually through to the semifinals after convincing wins in the Milo Cup quarterfinals first leg Friday.
The Bandar Penawar sports school, who won the league title last month, whipped development side 1MAS Perlis 10 while SSP-MSP-Thunderbolts defeated Bukit Jalil Sport School Juniors 6-1.
While many expected Thuderbolts to breeze into the semifinals, team manager Adam Izambry refuses to let their guard down. When asked about being virtually through to the next round, he replied: "Hopefully yes."
"We can't take things lightly. It is a comfortable lead and we are expected to progress but we have to keep a high standard. I don't want anyone to take their foot off the pedal," said Adam.
Meanwhile, UniKL Young Guns coach I. Vikneswaran was not too happy with his side's display despite a 3-0 win over Nur Insafi-Penang HA.
"We created so many chances but struggled to convert. Yes, it was a good win but we have to make the most of chances... it could be crucial in some matches.
"The return leg is a different scene as we travel to Sungai Petani and that could take a toll. Fortunately, we made arrangement to travel on tonight (Friday) so I hope it gives the players more time to rest and get used to the pitch."
UniKL took the lead after 11 minutes through Nur Faiz Rosli and he doubled the lead with another field goal in the 38th minute.
Hafif Elkan converted a penalty in the 61st minute to wrap proceedings. Vikneswaran was disappointed as the team only converted one of their seven penalty corners.
In the other quarterfinal, Petaling Jaya City Council beat SMKDBL PHJ 3-1.
