SIXTEEN-TIME champions Kuala Lumpur demolished Armed Forces 9-2 to become the first team to check into the final of the Razak Cup yesterday.
Kuala Lumpur played at a relaxed pace, but still overwhelmed the soldiers with deft shots in the semi-circle.
The soldiers were in deep trouble from the sixth minute onwards, and never recovered or offered a back. The KL goals were scored by Ismail Abu (sixth), M. Kaliswaran (ninth), Fairus Ramli (14th, 50th), Amin Rahim (18th), Kelvinder Singh (28th), Tajol Rosli (26th, 59th), Faizal Daud (60th).
Armed Forces got their consolations off Supri Junoh (23rd) and Ahmad Azuan (70th).
“We were only looking for three points, and never really went all out for goals, but they came easy. And tomorrow (today) in our final group fixtures against Negri (Sembilan) we will play our normal game, even though we have already qualified for the final,” said KL coach K. Dharmaraj.
However, Dharmaraj will rest Amin Rahim and Razie Rahim, who both have two yellow cards to their names.
“I will rest both the players, as I don’t want them to pick up anymore demerit points. I need them for the final,” said Dharmaraj.
In another Division One match, National Juniors upset Negri Sembilan 2-1, and threw the second finals ticket wide open.
Negri, Malacca and Perak will be in a do-or-die to claim the last berth today.

Canadian Sikhs keep identity

BEIJING - Some Canadians might not agree with the notion of altering or adding to the national team marching uniform for an Olympic opening ceremonies.
Yet after listening to Canadian field hockey player Ravi Kahlon's eloquent explanation, you at least understand the reasoning why he and three fellow Indo-Canadian players will wear turbans when marching into the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Summer Games on Friday.
The four players - Victoria's Kahlon, Bindi Kullar, of North Delta, B.C., Gabbar Singh of Surrey, B.C., and Ranjeev Deol of Mississauga, Ont., - don't wear turbans in everyday life and don't ever intend to. So why now, on this mammoth stage, with the world watching?
"I want to challenge the identity issue," said Kahlon, who admitted the other three players, and assistant coach and former Canadian Olympian Nicki Sandhu, were reluctant when he first broached the idea with them.
'My dad had to cut his beard and lose his turban to get a job when he came to Canada (in 1970). Now we can choose to wear a turban or not and it doesn't affect anybody making a living. Now we can celebrate that evolution of our country:'
"I want to show that you can wear a turban and still be Canadian," he added.
The reaction of other teammates has been mixed, admitted Kahlon, but most are supportive.
"When some of them first heard about this, a few said 'This is the Canadian team, not the Indian team,' " said Kahlon.
Exactly, noted Kahlon. That is precisely the point he wants to make. A turban is a Sikh religious symbol and in no way an Indian national symbol. Kahlon said as a Canadian he would never wear any symbol of Indian nationhood during the Olympics or at any international competition.
"This is no different than wearing a cross on your chest or a Jewish yarmulke during the opening ceremonies, which nobody would have any problem with," said Kahlon, an RBC mortgage specialist, and outstanding forward appearing in his second Olympic Games.
"We're a country of immigrants and this is a celebration of Canada and the fact that in our country, you can be anything you want to be. I think it's great that Italian-Canadians gather at shops along Commercial Drive (in Vancouver) and in Toronto to cheer on the Italian national soccer team. Nobody bats an eye about that. Nobody. They mean no offence. And we also mean no offence."
The family backgrounds of the two other Indo-Canadian players on Team Canada, Wayne Fernandes and Ken Pereira as well as head coach Louis Mendonca, are Goan and not Sikh, so they won't be wearing turbans in the opening ceremonies.
Kahlon was born and raised in Victoria but said he is cognizant of the immigrant experience and it's that part of Canada he has chosen to celebrate when marching into the massive 91,000-seat Bird's Nest Stadium Friday behind Canadian flag bearer and kayaker Adam van Koeverden, of Oakville, Ont.

Team Canada captain, Rob Short of Victoria, is supportive and any small grumbling there may on the team will have to go through him. Short and the Kahlons go back a long way. There is a well-dented garage door in the Gordon Head area of suburban Victoria that tells the tale of a journey to the Beijing Games. That's where brothers Rob and Pete Short, along with Kahlon, played their no-holds barred road hockey games in front of the Kahlon family home.
"The Sikh community in B.C. has been very good to us - it raised $15,000 in one weekend to help in our preparations for Beijing - and as captain, I have no problem with this (turbans in the opening ceremonies)," said Short.
"We all bring something of our backgrounds to our national team and as Canadians at the Olympics. This is a part of who Ravi, Bindi, Ranjeev and Gabbar are. My parents are English and that's why I came to play field hockey and not ice hockey."
Pete Short even takes it one step further.
"Pete asked if he could wear a turban, too, during the opening ceremonies," chuckled Kahlon.
"I said maybe when we get back to Canada and have our post-Games party."
And you don't even have to ask the colour of the opening ceremonies turbans.
"Canadian red, of course," said Kahlon.

Juniors finally win

NATIONAL Juniors notched their first win in the Razak Cup by whipping Armed Forces 7-2 in a Division One match at the Tun Razak Stadium in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Razlee Amree Mustafa was the toast of the Juniors when he scored a hat-trick, all from penalty corner set-pieces, in the 3rd, 23rd and 52nd minutes.
The other goals came from Azreen Rizal Nasir in the 17th minute, Muhd Azammi Adabi (29th), Mohd Fareez Ismail (38th) and Mohd Fitri Abu Bakar (54th).
Armed Forces replied through Zaini Sarip (42nd) and Supri Junoh (46th).
The win was also thier first win under newly appointed coach K. Rajan.
“My charges are gradually gaining confidence and I hope they can maintain their form in the remaining matches,” he said.
Meanwhile, tournament favourites Negri Sembilan fought to a 1-1 draw against Perak.
Negri drew first blood through A.Sasidaran’s penalty corner setpiece in the 12th minute.
However, Perak drew level, two minutes later, off Azli Misron’s penalty corner.
Kuala Lumpur, the current Division leaders on 12 points, plays Armed Forces today and a win will ensure them a spot the final.

Juniors lose their cool

LACK of discipline saw National Juniors lose 2-1 to Perak in Division One of the Razak Cup at the Tun Razak Stadium yesterday.
The Juniors were more interested in arguing with umpires decisions, and Razlee Amree was even banned a match for manhandling umpire K. Lingam.
The incident happened after Perak scored their second goal off a penalty corner rebound. Razlee charged at Lingam and blocked his path after he blew for goal, and the umpire ignored him but did not take out his cards.
However, the technical desk which witnessed the incident, handed Razlee a one-match suspension after the match had ended.
"I am disappointed with their lack of discipline in this match, and gave them a stern warning not to argue with umpires anymore. I will not hesitate to show the door, to any player who is more interested in arguing than playing," said Juniors coach K. Rajan.
Perak took the lead off Hafifi Hafiz’s field goal in the 10th minute, but Razlee scored the equaliser in a 17th minute penalty corner attempt.
But Perak, last year’s silver medallists, collected full points when Azli Misron scored off a penalty corner rebound in the 52nd minute.
"We are not here to win the tournament. I am more interested to see how they perform as an attacking outfit. And after the tournament, I will work on their fitness, and I am confident that they will turn into better players," said Rajan.

Negri hammer Malacca

FORMER national skipper S. Kuhan's hat-trick helped Negri Sembilan pull off a stunning 6-1 win over Malacca in Division One of the Razak Cup at the Tun Razak Stadium yesterday.
In another Division One match, Kuala Lumpur beat Perak 2-1 to keep pace with Negri on nine points after twomatches.
Negri, who beat Armed Froces 2-1 on Saturday, started the rout with a seventh minute penalty corner executed by Kuhan.
But Malacca equalised in the 13th minute, when Ariffin Dollah sounded the board off a field attempt.
Kuhan again gave Negri the lead with a 17th minute penalty corner flick, and the rest of the goals came easy. Suhaimi Ibrahim (20th, 42nd), K. Amuthan (57th) and Kuhan 60th, handed the three points to Negri.
"We played much better as an outfit as compared to the first match (against Armed Forces), and are now looking forward to a good outing in the rermaining matches," said Negri coach Jailani Sulaiman.
Former national player Suhaimi Ibrahim was at his element, while No 1 goalkeeper S. Kumar was kept busy by Malacca strikers, but held firm.
"We have a well balanced team this year, but still, I predict the remaining matches will not be as easy as Malacca. We have a rest day tomorrow (today) and it will give us some time to plan for the tough match against Johor (on Tuesday)," said Jailani.
Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur found Perak a tough nut to crack in the first half, but a brace from former national player Amin Rahim in the 47th and 58th minutes was enough for three points. Perak scored their consolation in the 70th minute off an Azlan Misron field attempt.
"We won both our matches narrowly (on Saturday KL beat Malacca 2-1), but all my players are experienced, and should play better as a team in the remaining matches," said Kuala Lumpur coach K. Dharmaraj.
