THE Malaysian women's hockey team ended fifth in the Olympic Qualifiers when they blanked Austria 5-0 in Kakamigahara yesterday.
It was Malaysia's first win of the tournament. A kalidescope of goals in a seven minute span ultimately lifted Malaysia as they put in three markers between the 40th and 47th minute.
But until the eruption of offense in the second half, the game was relatively tight. Malaysia held a 2-0 lead at the break after Siti Rahmah Othman (12th) and A. Kannagi (31st) scored their first goals of the event.
The other goals came off Nor Azlin Sumantri (40th), Juliani Din (43rd) and Norbaini Hashim (47th).
It was redemption to the 3-2 loss against the Austrians on the final day of round robin action.
Japan booked their third consecutive Olympics ticket, when they beat Azerbaijan 5-1 in the final. The bronze was won by Chile, who beat Belarus 2-1.
